Eucalyptus exhibits antibacterial activity

Salmonella typhi is one of the more important pathogenic bacteria in South Asia. It causes detrimental disease like typhoid, diarrhea etc. Efforts have been made to combat this microorganism since immemorial time. Multidrug resistance of pathogenic microorganisms is a major medical problem. Screening of natural products in a search for new antimicrobial agents that would be active against this organism is the need of the hour. The present work mainly deals with the identification of antibacterial activity of the extracts of different medicinal plants prepared in polar and non-polar solvents. The study was done with the help of agar DD method by testing the activity of plant extracts on pathogenic bacterial strain of S. typhi. The Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) was measured to compare the antibacterial activity of different plant extracts prepared in different solvents. The results obtained suggest that the best kind of activity was observed in Eucalyptus, where as it was not that good in lemon and orange. The distilled water and toluene extract of eucalyptus are more potent than others. At a concentration of 10 mgML-1, Distilled water and toluene extracts showed maximum ZOI (18.75±2.581 mm and 14.50±2.380 mm respectively). The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of DW and toluene extracts of Eucalyptus was 0.078 mgML-1 and 0.183 mgML-1 respectively. Thus, further molecular study may be done with the eucalyptus extract in distilled water and toluene.
