Kanamycin (marketed under the brand name Kantrex®) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic, available in both oral and intravenous forms, and used to treat a wide variety of infections.
PharmacologyKanamycin works by affecting an unknown aspect of translocation (part of the translation process in which the mRNA is shifted one codon in relation to the ribosome), and by causing messenger RNA (mRNA) to be misread by the ribosome, causing a lethal level of translational errors.Side effectsCommon side effects include changes in hearing (either hearing loss or ringing in the ears), toxicity to kidneys, and allergic reactions to the drug.rating: 5.00 from 1 votes | updated on: 24 Feb 2008 | views: 1225 | |
